protocat: I saw Southland Tales recently!
protocat: I think I told you. :o
markpasc: woohoo!
markpasc: i'm not sure you told me you saw it. i know you wanted to see it.
protocat: Southland Tales was the best remake of Repo Man that John Waters and David Lynch could have done.
protocat: Plus the Strange Days cast.
protocat: It was a good reunion!
markpasc: omg do you know what i just saw this past week from Netflix? REPO MAN
protocat: ahahhaa I love Repo Man. That's one of my favorite films ever.
markpasc: and i was totally going to write about how it reminded me of Southland Tales
markpasc: in pretty much the same exact way you just said
Southland Tales seemed to be a strange hybrid in many ways. With its large ensemble of weird characters, it reminded me most not of any movie, but of Matt Ruff's novel
Sewer, Gas & Electric.
Repo Man felt like an archetype of a particular genre you no longer see:
the ’80s character adventure.
Southland Tales is somewhat that, but an even better contemporary example is
Be Kind Rewind, which is such a strong example of the genre that it feels like a movie of the ’80s.
I thought I was going to write a whole post about this but that's the core idea.
